Pet of the Month!
Meet Poppy!
Poppy has been successfully weaned off oxygen support and is now back home with
her family as she continues to recover from a Blastomycosis infection.
What is Blastomycosis?
Blastomycosis, or “Blasto,” is a serious fungal infection that can be life-threatening if not
treated early. Both pets and humans can become infected by inhaling fungal spores
typically found in moist soil. Unfortunately, the Ohio River Valley is part of the region
where these spores are common.
Treatment involves long-term antifungal medications, often spanning several months.
While early treatment greatly improves the chance of recovery, the resulting
inflammatory response can also pose risks. This complication is what brought Poppy
to MVSES.
After starting antifungal treatment prescribed by her primary veterinarian, Poppy’s
condition began to decline; she developed a fever, loss of appetite, and increased
respiratory effort. Her family acted quickly and brought her to MVSES, where she was
hospitalized for supportive care, including a nasal oxygen tube.
After five days of hospitalization, Poppy was eating well, alert, and breathing
comfortably without supplemental oxygen support and was able to go home! We are
so thankful Poppy has responded well to treatment and wish her a gentle recovery!
This is a picture of Beau celebrating his 12th birthday with a sugar cookie! Thank you to Dr. Ruehlmann and staff for all you have done for him.
Tucker has been a patient at MVS, and specifically under Dr. Ruehlmann’s care, since being diagnosed with a neurolgic condition in November of 2015. From the start I knew we were in great hands, and were always communicated to during his initial 8 day stay with courtesy and compassion. Tucker is a regular at MVS and we always feel like everyone there cares for him almost as much as we do! I don’t know where we’d be without the great medical staff at MVS. We are thankful he has such a great team of experts to help manage his condition and give him an ongoing good quality of life!
