Dermatology
Skin and ear problems are the most commonly reported reasons for veterinary visits. As many of these diseases can look similar on the outside, a veterinary dermatologist works to identify the underlying causes for skin lesions, hair loss, ear infections, and/or itchiness in your pet. Dr. Roberts specializes in environmental skin allergies, cutaneous food hypersensitivities, immune-mediated skin diseases, management of outer/middle ear infections, resistant bacterial infections, claw/nail abnormalities, and inherited skin disorders. The Metropolitan Veterinary Specialists’ dermatology service offers intradermal allergy testing, formulation of immunotherapy (allergy vaccines), skin biopsies with submission to a dermatohistopathologist, and video otoscopy (endoscopy for the ear).
If your pet is experiencing any of the following symptoms, then please discuss with your family veterinarian if a referral to a veterinary dermatologist may be beneficial:
- Licking of paws
- Scratching, rubbing, or chewing on any part of the body
- Repeated skin or ear infections
- Hair loss
- Bumps, scabs, or redness on the skin
- Breaking or cracking of claws
- Changes in color or appearance of the nose
